Lo-Manthang Trekking

To trek in Upper Mustang is a rare privilege. Here you will experience a way of life of true mountain people, who for hundreds of years, had very little contact with the rest of Nepal and retained their rich cultural heritage. Until recent times their king was officially recognized by the Government of Nepal.

In many ways, a trek into Upper Mustang is similar to trekking in Tibet, as geographically it is a part of the Tibetan plateau. The district of Mustang was, until 1950, a separate kingdom within the boundaries of Nepal. The last king, the Raja of Mustang, still has his home in the ancient capital known as Lo Manthang.

Why trek the Lo-Manthang Trek?

Upper Mustang was opened to non-Nepali trekkers only some fifteen years ago and even today, access is still highly restricted. To enter Upper Mustang, that is to travel further north of Kagbeni, trekkers need a special trekking permit and must be accompanied by a government appointed official.

Top highlights of this trek include:

  • It is far less crowded than its more well-known peers Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit. The word is getting out about Upper Mustang, but there are still about 10 times fewer trekkers on the Upper Mustang Trail
  • The trek is wild and remote, yet there are teahouses at everyday stage, so trekkers don’t need to bring tents and food, making it more accessible and affordable than similar treks.
  • You can walk freely without worrying about the rain as the region lies in the rain shadow area of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
  • You will have spiritual feel walking through many Gompas, chortens, flapping prayer flags, caves, rock paintings, and century-old monasteries.
  • You will catch a live glimpse of Tibetan influence on the everyday activities and culture of the locals there.
  • You will be proceeding further on the trip with the enticing views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and other chains of mountains.

How much is the fee of the Upper Mustang trek permit?

Upper Mustang Trek is one of the most expensive trekking in terms of the cost of trekking permit for foreigner tourist. The trek requires two different types of the permit, which are:

Mustang restricted permit all nations including Indian:  US$ 500 per person for the 10 days and USD 50 per additional day.

ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit) US$ 30 or NPR 3000

Accommodation during the Trek

Each night, you'll be staying in local Guesthouse run by the local communities along the trek. Most Guesthouse are quite basic but comfortable, with two single beds in each room. There is a common area for meals and relaxing, which is a great place to stay warm around the fire at night.
