Thamel is the go-to hub for all things Nepalese, offering a plethora of goods. Yet, various areas specialize in distinct crafts. Since October 2017, downtown Thamel has been car-free, enhancing the shopping experience. However, be wary of overly cheap pashminas, as some bargains may not be genuine.
For exquisite Tibetan-style wool carpets, make your way to the Tibetan refugee workshops located in Jawalakhel, situated in southern Patan. Patan is renowned for its unparalleled collection of Buddhist statuary, with the backstreets adorned with numerous metal workshops.
Nepal leads in fair-trade initiatives, with numerous shops promoting and selling handicrafts from ethical sources, including women's groups. Kupondole hill, en route to Patan, hosts a cluster of fair-trade design shops, notably the esteemed Mahaguthi outlet. Lazimpat, in northern Kathmandu, also boasts several fair-trade stores.
In central Kathmandu, One Tree Stop on Durbar Marg stands out—a small yet dynamic shop offering a rotating selection of crafts by local artisans and designers. Upstairs, the café staffed by deaf individuals provides a welcoming respite to recharge.
In Kathmandu, you'll find the best selection of Tibetan prayer flags, brocade and embroidered silks at shops around the Katheshimbu stupa, just south of Thamel. You can even get a tailor to make you a set of Tibetan or Sherpa traditional clothes here. (You can do the same around Boudha, too, where many Tibetans and Sherpas reside.) Top this off with a traditional Nepali topi hat at the nearby cluster of shops at Kel Tole. Finally, the colorful local market at nearby Asan Tole is the most interesting place to pick up spices and is a fabulously photogenic place for an early morning stroll.
The premier shopping destination in Kathmandu, Labim Mall, situated on Pulchowk in Patan, emerged just after the earthquake. Spanning five floors and covering 200,000 square feet, this complex houses popular eateries such as Roadhouse Pizzeria and Le Mirch, alongside renowned Western brands like ESPRIT and GEOX, alongside many local favorites.
Beyond shopping, LEVEL 3, a rooftop terrace bar and lounge, draws Nepali celebrities and elites on Wednesdays and weekends. For a comfortable cinematic experience, indulge in plush stadium seating at QFX Cinemas.
For premium crafts and upscale shopping, a taxi ride to Baber Mahal Revisited is highly recommended.
