Island Peak Climbing

Island Peak, located at 6189 meters above sea level is also known as Imja Tse in the local language. The name Island Peak was given by English mountaineer - Eric Shipton in 1951. The name Island Peak is justified as the peak is located isolated in the center surrounded by glaciers that are descending from tall mountain peaks above 7,000 m and 8,000 m.

Island Peak climbing with Everest Base Camp Trek is a fantastic experience in the Himalayas of Nepal. It is designed for energetic and physically fit trekkers with little or no experience in mountain expedition. Island Peak (6,189m/20,305ft) is one of the main climbing peaks in the Everest Region of Nepal with an impressive and highly glaciated West Face that rises from the Lhotse Glacier. Being one of the 'trekking peaks' with very little technical aspects, Island Peak is not a difficult undertaking for a beginner climber wishing to enter the incredible world of mountain climbing.

Hundreds of climbers flock to Nepal every year to get a permit for Island Peak climbing. Our adventure also takes us into the heartland of the Khumbu Valley and Sherpa culture. Before scaling the peak, we also visit, possibly the most popular trekking destination in the world - Everest Base Camp (5,357m/17,575ft) and Kala Patthar - for the up-close views of Mt. Everest and other high mountains.

The Island peak climbing itinerary has proper and gradual acclimatization at suitable intervals. The 18-day journey begins from and comes to a conclusion at one of the most famous airstrips in the world, the Lukla Airport in the Everest Region.

Brief Introduction

The Island Peak Climbing is one of the most popular climbing journeys in Nepal. This Journey is perfect for energetic and physically fit climbers having a desire for adventure.

Island Peak has been climbed by many people since time immemorial (including Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary) and at some point in time, became the preferred climbing peak who seek a challenging route.

The peak rises from the Lhotse glacier from the southern end and from the peak summit, captivates you with its marvelous panoramic beauty and most appreciably, you will get a standardized viewpoint to peek at Mount Everest up close.

Island Peak climbing expedition can also be considered as the training grounds for peaks above 7000 meters. Climbing Island Peak is physically hard but not technically challenging and is perfect for those who wish to expand their experience toward mountain expeditions.

Standing on the summit of the Island peak gives you a feeling of accomplishment. From here you get stunning views of the southern faces of Everest and Lhotse. You also get to see Ama Dablam and Makalu.

Our journey starts with an adventurous flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The walking begins right away from Lukla and goes through Phakding to the Dudh Koshi valley following through Namche, and then Tengboche to Dingboche. Finally, we move downwards to Chhukung and upwards to the Island Peak Base Camp and prepare for our venture.

Peak climbing requires lots of practice as well as involves crossing the crevassed glacier and extensive use of gears such as ladders, jumar, ropes, and traversing through the snowy terrain. On our 18 days itinerary, the 10th day is dedicated to practicing climbing techniques using proper gears, and the following day we summit the peak.

Itinerary

Seeking for a real adventure? Our travel itinerary is based on years of trekking expertise, ensuring that you have a fun and safe vacation. However, like with all such risky excursions, there may be instances where we must change the schedule, possibly without much notice. While we make every attempt to stick to the timetable, we humbly ask for your patience and flexibility if unforeseen circumstances like weather or unforeseen natural events come into play. You may be sure that our knowledgeable guides will adjust as needed to make your tour as enjoyable as possible.

Schedule for each day
Days: 1 Arrival in Kathmandu
Immediately upon your arrival in Kathmandu, your guide will greet you at the airport with colorful flower chains. You will be taken to your hotel, which is located in the lively tourist center of Thamel and thus within walking distance to the historic old town. Depending on your arrival time, your tour guide can guide you through the narrow streets, giving you a first glimpse of authentic Nepalese life. In the evening, we invite you to a traditional Nepalese welcome dinner at the hotel.
Days: 2 Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2828m) and trek to Phakding (2600m)
In the early morning we fly with small aircraft of the airlines Buddha Air or Yeti Air from Kathmandu to Lukla. The 45-minute flight offers spectacular panoramic views of the eastern Himalayan ranges, Langtang, Gauri-Shanker, Numbur, Manglungtse and, to crown it, the Everest mountain range. After landing at Edmund Hillary Airport in Lukla, we drink a fresh, hot coffee while our porters arrive. Our hike begins with a short climb to the Dudh Koshi Valley. From the village of Chaunrikarkar (2621m) the road leads north through quaint Sherpa villages where wheat, potatoes, corn and vegetables are grown. On a suspension bridge we cross the Dudh Koshi and reach Phakding. # Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Days: 3 Trek from Phakding (2600m) to Namche Bazaar (3446m)
Today we start slowly up the Dudh Koshi valley. Just before we reach Namche Bazaar we cross the highest suspension bridge, the famous Hillary Bridge. From here you can enjoy a first fantastic view of Thamserku (6608m), Everest (8848m) and Lhotse (8511m). After a short but hard climb we reach the capital of the Sherpa country. More than 400 years ago, people from East Tibet settled in Namche Bazaar (in Tibetan: Sher = East, Pa = People, Sherpa = People from the East). Situated on a mountainside, the largest market in the upper Solukhumbu area is situated in a picturesque location. Once upon a time countless traders from Tibet arrived here and offered their goods in the largest market of the Khumbu region. # Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Days: 4 Acclimation Day in Namche Bazaar
Today's day in Namche Bazaar is at your leisure and is the ideal place to get used to the high altitude. The countless lodges and restaurants invite you to linger. Enjoy in peace the breathtaking mountain landscape and the view of the surrounding fields and plots. On request, we can do a half-day hike to the slightly higher villages Khunde and Khumjung (3780m). In the evening we can admire the sunset over Ama Dablam, Nuptse and Everest. # Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Days: 5 Hike from Namche Bazaar (3450 m) to Tengpoche (3865 m)
From Namche we follow a beautiful mountain trail until we reach Phunke Tenga (3250 m) after a gentle descent. After a fortifying lunch break we climb up to Tengboche. The magnificent mountain scenery and the view of the Ama Dablam reward our climb. Upon arrival, we will visit the famous Tengboche Buddhist Monastery, one of the highlights on our extraordinary trekking tour. Overnight in a lodge # Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Days: 6 Hike from Tengpoche (3865 m) to Chhukhung (4730 m)
Today we climb steadily up the Dhud Khosi valley. Soon we reach the tree line. It goes past spreading yak pastures. Nevertheless, agriculture is still practiced here, even if only slightly demanding potatoes are grown. The village Dingboche nestles on the mountainside and is romantically surrounded by mountains. Overnight in a lodge # Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Days: 7 : Acclimatization day at Dingboche and hike to Chukkung Valley (4730m) Duration: 4-5 hours.
It is sensible to spend another day acclimatizing before heading to higher altitudes. One way of doing this is to hike up to Chukkung Valley (4730m) and on to Island Peak (Imja Tes). Above Dingboche is Nagkartshang Gompa (a strenuous trek takes around 2 to 3 hours), or alternatively head to Pheriche for an afternoon lecture on altitude sickness. The trail to Chhukung leaves Dingboche heading to Bibr (4570m) and is surrounded by fabulous mountain Peaks: Taboche, Nuptse, Lhotse, the enormous flute-shaped pass of Amphu Laptsa Pass, Ama Dablam. Chukkung has several lodges and is the most popular spot for those climbing Island Peak. If trekkers feel better acclimatized they can head up a grassy slope towards the peak of Chukkung Ri (5550m) for a magnificent view of Makalu. Breakfast, lunch & dinner included
Days: 8 : Trek From Dingboche to Lobuche (4,900 meters) Duration: 5-6 hours
After breakfast, our trek starts with an easy walk towards Thukla before crossing the steep terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier and then passing through the boulder-strewn slopes as we ascend Chupki Lhara where we find clusters of stones with prayer flags placed by Sherpas as a memorial to Scott Fischer (American mountaineer), 10-time Everest summiteer Babu Chiri Sherpa (Nepalese Sherpa mountain guide) who perished on a mission to climb Mt. Everest. The path then continues to the Khumbu Glacier moraine and before us are many beautiful mountain peaks - Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Mahalangur Himal. We stay overnight in Lobuche. Breakfast, lunch & dinner included
Days: 9 : Trek to Gorak shep (5,180m) trek to EBC & overnight stay at Gorekshep Duration: 7-8 hours.
We commence our trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp through the vast Gorak-Shep. Along the trail, we pass the Indian army mountaineers' memorials. At this point the path can be confusing, so following your guide is important. The thin air at this high altitude can be exhausting. We traverse rocky dunes, moraine, and streams before reaching the Mt. Everest Base Camp. From Everest Base Camp you will see some of the world’s highest peaks, in stark contrast to the gray surroundings - especially in the spring. Before we are Khumbuste, Nuptse, and Pumori. We will then head back to Gorak Shep. Breakfast Lunch & Dinner Included.
Days: 10 : Hike to Kalapatthar (5,550m) at sunrise & trek to Lobuche (4,900 m) Duration: 7-9 hours.
At around 4 a.m. in the pre-dawn darkness and cold temperatures (-10 to -14 C) we begin our trek. It is common for there to be cold winds at this altitude. Towering peaks, such as Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Changtse loom before us to the east as Everest comes into view. Not until we reach Kala Patthar (5550m) do we get a 360 degree up-close and bird’s eye view of Mount Everest. After taking in the panoramic views and madly clicking cameras we will return back to Lobuchefor a good night's rest. Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
Days: 11 : Trek from Lobuche to Kongma La (5,535m/18,159ft) to Chhukung (4,730m/15,518ft) Duration: 7-8 hours.
Once again, after breakfast, we trek via Khumbu through ice masses to Kongma La Base Camp at (5,000m/16,404ft). This section of our ascent to Kongma La pass is probably the most difficult part of our trek. Along the way there are many rock cairns draped in prayer flags marking the pass. On our decent we trek through Imja Khola where water from the slopes of Everest collect. After passing through this valley we descend to Chhukung a quaint summer settlement. After reaching Chhukung your guide will check his instruments and our equipment before our final climb to Chhukung. Instead of taking the route through Kongma La pass we may take an alternative route via Dingboche to Chhukung. Meals - breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Days: 12 : Trek to Island Peak base camp (5,200m/17,060ft) Duration: 4-5 hours.
Although Island peak does not require technical expertise, it does however require strength and stamina. It does however require some basic skills and how to avoid mishaps. It is essential that we reach the summit before lunch, as in the afternoon it can be extremely windy. The path climbs hundreds of meters from the bottom camp before facing a sharp incline initially on a sandy trail before turning to grass, and finally over boulders. The path eventually narrows before entering a steep rock vale (narrow channel of rock). We finally, after many steps across and through the vale emerge on the other side Your guide, for safety reasons, may fix a rope to each climber to assist in climbing the final snowy slope to the ridge at the summit. The rope may often extend to 350m depending on the season and danger of crevices. Some of these crevices may be 2 to 3 meters across requiring the use of ladders. Once at the summit it is time to take out your camera and capture the magnificent views and get your breath back!. We will then descent to Island Peak Base Camp, and with your guides, will celebrate our success. Meals - breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Days: 13 : Island Peak base camp to Island Peak summit (6,189m/20,305ft), back to base camp: 10-12 hours.

Days: 14 : Trek from Island Peak Base Camp to Pangboche (3,985m/13,074ft) 5-6 hours.
After yesterday’s more strenuous climb, today’s trek will be relatively easy as we head down to lower altitudes. We take a similar route back through Khumbu Khola reaching the Asiatic villages of Orsho, and Shomare. We may also take a historically significant path to go to the Gompa in higher Pangboche which is said to be the oldest route in the Khumbu region. Alternatively, we may take the usual path to Pangboche, a picturesque village with Everest to the north and Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kangtaiga to the east with Kongde in the south. The Imja Khola River can be seen meandering through the wide fertile land. I Meals - Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Days: 15 : Trek from Pangboche to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,286ft): 4-5 hours.
Leaving Pangboche we return on the same path to Imja Khola heading up through the forest to Tengboche. If there is enough interest we can visit the nuns at their Tengboche residence. After lunch at Tengboche we descend along a path surrounded by alpine bush and juniper trees. After crossing the bridge over the Dudh Koshi watercourse, our path takes us to Dudh Koshi Gorge taking us through pine forests before finally reaching Sansa. On the way down we should keep our eyes peeled for glimpses of mountain goats, snow leopards, colorful pheasants, and other wildlife. After emerging from the forest we pass through Chorten before reaching the military camp at Namche Bazaar. Tonight we stay at Namche Bazaar. Meals - Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Days: 16 : Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft) Duration: 6-7 hours.
The rocky path down is steep and it is advised to be cautious crossing this rocky landscape. We eventually cross the suspension bridges over the rapid flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries, where the path becomes flatter and easier to negotiate. After our arrival in Lukla we can stretch our aching legs and blissfully recall the exhilarating experiences of the last few weeks. Meals - breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Days: 17 : Fly back to Kathmandu (1,350m/4,428ft).
Today we take a morning flight to Kathmandu. In Kathmandu, we can reminisce and can shop for souvenirs. Our guides will steer you in the right direction and where to find some bargains! In the evening we share a farewell dinner to celebrate your climb to the summit of Island Peak. Meals - breakfast & dinner.
