Brief Introduction

Kailash Tour via Simikot is an excellent journey to Mt. Kailash whereby we experience trekking in one of the most remote western parts of Nepal before entering Tibet.  We arrive in Kathmandu and spend a day resting and preparing for the trip and fly to Nepalgunj, a city in the western Terai plains of Nepal the next day. On our Simikot to Kailash journey, we travel along ancient pilgrimage routes and trade links, trekking across the border into Tibet. The Tibet tour starts with a visit to the Garuda valley, a place believed to be the cradle of the Tibetan civilization during the ancient times when Bon religion was practiced throughout Tibet, long before Buddhism was introduced. Next, we circumambulate Mt. Kailash and tour Mansarovar Lake, both of which hold great natural, cultural and religious significance. The Kailash Tour via Simikot ends in Lhasa which is called the ‘cradle of Tibetan civilization.

The best time to trek from Simikot to Mansarovar is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer clear skies, moderate temperatures, and the most favorable trekking conditions in the high-altitude regions.

This trek is considered moderate to challenging due to its high-altitude nature and remote terrain. It involves several days of trekking at elevations above 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), with steep ascents and variable weather conditions. A good level of fitness and previous trekking experience is recommended.

The highest point on this trek is near Lake Mansarovar at an elevation of 4,556 meters (14,948 feet). You will also pass through several high-altitude passes and rugged terrain during the trek.

The Simikot to Mansarovar trek typically takes around 12 to 15 days, including travel days to and from Kathmandu. The exact duration depends on factors such as weather, acclimatization, and trekking pace.

Yes, a licensed guide is essential for this trek, as it takes you through remote and high-altitude regions with restricted areas. A guide will help with navigation, ensure safety, and manage the necessary permits and logistics.

Accommodation during the trek is basic, with teahouses, guesthouses, and camping along the route. In the more remote areas, the facilities are minimal, but they provide basic comfort and shelter for trekkers. In Kathmandu and Simikot, you'll stay in hotels.

While it is possible to trek solo, it is highly recommended to join an organized group with a guide. The remote nature of the trek, the need for special permits, and the physical demands make it safer and more enjoyable to trek with experienced guides and support staff.

You will need to pack appropriate high-altitude trekking gear, including trekking boots, warm clothing (layers), a sleeping bag, trekking poles, sunscreen, a first aid kit, and a rain jacket. A detailed packing list will be provided by your trekking agency.

Internet access is limited along the trek, especially in the more remote areas of Humla and Tibet. You may have internet access in Kathmandu and Simikot, but expect to be mostly disconnected during the trek itself.

Altitude sickness is a risk, especially due to the high elevations. It is crucial to acclimatize properly and take rest days as advised by your guide. Drink plenty of water, ascend slowly, and listen to your body to prevent altitude sickness.

Food along the trek is basic but nutritious, consisting of dal bhat (lentils and rice), noodle soups, vegetables, and some meat options. In more remote areas, the variety may be limited, but you’ll receive enough energy to sustain you during the trek.

Yes, you will need a Nepal visa and a Tibet Travel Permit for entry to Tibet. Your trekking agency will assist in obtaining the necessary permits for both Nepal and Tibet.

Mansarovar is considered a sacred lake in both Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism, with pilgrims believing that bathing in its holy waters purifies the soul. Mount Kailash, located nearby, is regarded as the spiritual home of Lord Shiva by Hindus and is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Jains, and Bon practitioners.
