Island peak permit

Climbing Island Peak (Imja Tse) requires an official permit issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, with costs varying by season from USD 70 to USD 350. Additional permits include entry to Sagarmatha National Park and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality area. All permits are arranged through registered trekking agencies, and a licensed climbing guide is mandatory for a safe and successful ascent.

Climbing Island Peak (Imja Tse) (6,189m), one of the most popular trekking peaks in Nepal’s Everest region, requires several official permits issued by national and local authorities. These permits are mandatory for all climbers and are designed to regulate mountaineering activities, ensure safety, and protect the fragile Himalayan environment.

The main climbing permit is issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). The fee varies depending on the season. During the Spring season (March to May)—the most popular and best climbing period—the permit costs around USD 250 to USD 350. In the Autumn season (September to November), it is generally USD 125 to USD 175. For the Winter and Summer seasons (December to February and June to August), the fee is lower, around USD 70 to USD 175, though weather conditions can be more challenging.

In addition to the climbing permit, climbers must obtain an entry permit for Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its glaciers, mountains, and unique biodiversity. This permit costs approximately NPR 3,000 (about USD 30) per person .

Another required permit is the local area permit issued by the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality. This permit also costs around NPR 3,000 (about USD 30) and supports local development, trail maintenance, and community welfare in the Khumbu region .

A garbage management deposit of USD 500 is also required for Island Peak expeditions. This amount is fully refundable after the climb, provided that all waste is properly managed and returned according to environmental regulations.

It is mandatory to climb Island Peak with a licensed and experienced climbing guide, as required by Nepal government rules. All permits and logistics are generally arranged through a registered trekking and climbing company such as Nepal New Generation Trek and Adventure, ensuring a safe, smooth, and well-organized expedition experience.

Although permit costs are relatively moderate, the total Island Peak expedition cost typically ranges from USD 2,000 to USD 4,000, depending on services, itinerary duration, group size, and inclusions such as guides, porters, accommodation, meals, and climbing equipment.
